October 18 is a neat snapshot of how the domain business matured: a national registry secured its future, domain marketplaces expanded instant-transfer distribution, and a country-code domain sold for a quarter of a million dollars.
Registry. Marketplace. Aftermarket.
Pretty much the domainer food chain.
2007 – Neustar Keeps Control of .US
On October 18, 2007, the U.S. Department of Commerce notified NeuStar that it had won the contract to continue operating the .us registry.
NeuStar had already managed .us since 2001.
The United States kept its country-code domain operator.
Domainers kept asking why Americans still prefer .com.
2011 – SedoMLS Adds Dotster
On October 18, 2011, Sedo announced that registrar Dotster had joined the SedoMLS distribution network.
Dotster managed more than one million domains, and the integration expanded Sedo’s system for exposing aftermarket domains through registrars with instant-transfer capability.
List once.
Sell somewhere else.
A concept domain investors rather like.
2018 – Casino.ro Sells for €220,000
On October 18, 2018, Domain Name Wire reported the sale of Casino.ro for €220,000 — approximately $250,000 at the time.
The Romanian ccTLD even beat the .com sales on that week’s Sedo list.
Casino.ro.
One word + the right country code = jackpot.
Sometimes literally.
“Domain names will not go away in our lifetime.”
— Paul Stahura
October 18 reminds us that the domain industry is not only about finding good words.
It also needs registries to operate them, marketplaces to distribute them and buyers willing to pay €220,000 for the right one.
Have a great day… and even better domain sales!
