Domain investing in Moldova is banned, we’re done.
On May 19, 2026, Moldova’s communications regulator, the National Regulatory Agency for Communications (ARCOM), announced a public consultation regarding a proposed new regulation for the .md country-code top-level domain (ccTLD).
The consultation is open until June 17, 2026.
According to the official announcement, the proposed regulation would replace the current rules established under Administrative Council Decision No. 42/2020 and introduce updated provisions related to registration, renewal, blocking, withdrawal, transfer procedures, dispute resolution, Premium domains, and measures aimed at preventing speculative or abusive registrations within the mdTLD.
The project states that its goals include strengthening Moldova’s online identity, promoting national values, encouraging cross-border online activities, and reducing negative effects related to the registration and use of .md domain names.
Why This Matters
The .md extension is not used exclusively in the Republic of Moldova. Over the years, it has attracted interest from businesses, developers, medical projects, startups, marketers, and domain investors around the world.
As a result, changes to the regulatory framework may affect not only local registrants but also international users of the .md namespace.
Key Areas of Interest
Among the topics that may attract attention from domain investors and registrants are:
- Registration and renewal procedures;
- Transfer procedures;
- Blocking, withdrawal, and revocation mechanisms;
- Alternative dispute resolution procedures;
- Premium domain definitions and conditions;
- Measures aimed at preventing speculative or abusive registrations.
Some of these provisions are common among country-code domain registries, while others could influence the future development of the .md aftermarket.
Opportunity to Participate
Interested parties may submit comments and recommendations directly to ARCOM during the consultation process.
For domain investors, developers, registrants, and members of the domain industry, this may be a rare opportunity to contribute suggestions before the final version of the regulation is adopted.
Questions for the Domain Community
The proposal raises several interesting questions:
- Could clearer rules increase confidence in .md as a digital asset?
- How might Premium domain policies affect the market?
- Could anti-abuse provisions influence domain liquidity?
- Will stronger dispute-resolution procedures encourage broader adoption of .md?
- How might these changes affect the long-term value of high-quality generic .md domains?
The consultation remains open until June 17, 2026, and the outcome may help shape the future of the .md namespace for years to come.
