I try to understand…

David Chelly is one of the long-standing figures of the French domain name industry: a domainer, website publisher, consultant, author and educator whose work connects domain investing with SEO and the wider economics of the web.

He describes himself as a domain name lover since 2005 and has more than 25 years of experience in the internet business. His activities go well beyond buying and selling domains: he manages a large network of websites, works with expired domains, advises on naming and web strategy, and regularly shares research and market observations.

Chelly is also a co-founder of NDDCamp, one of the main French events dedicated to domain names, bringing together domain investors, registrars, registries, SEO specialists, lawyers and other professionals from the industry.

In 2020, he published Stratégie web : le rôle central des noms de domaine, a multidisciplinary book covering the technical, legal, marketing and SEO sides of domain names.

A Domainer Who Thinks in Systems

What I find particularly interesting about David Chelly is his pragmatic approach to domain investing.

I had the opportunity to follow one of his training sessions, and one idea stayed with me: a domain sale does not necessarily need a spectacular profit to make economic sense.

A modest margin repeated across a sufficiently large portfolio can become a business model.

That sounds obvious once someone says it. Before that, domain investors may spend years waiting for every €20 acquisition to magically become a €20,000 sale.

The more interesting lesson is that there is no universal domain-investing strategy. Portfolio size, renewal costs, taxes, sales frequency and operating structure can completely change whether the same strategy is brilliant for one investor and disastrous for another.

That practical perspective is perhaps one of Chelly’s most useful contributions to the domaining community: treating domains not only as attractive digital assets, but as part of a real economic system.

And sometimes the spreadsheet is considerably less romantic than the domain name.
