The .பரிட்சை domain is a small but meaningful part of Internet history. Written in Tamil script, it represented the word “test” and belonged to ICANN’s early experiment with internationalized top-level domains. It was not created for public registration, but for something bigger: proving that the Internet could work beyond Latin letters.
Overview
.பரிட்சை was one of the eleven internationalized domain name test top-level domains introduced by ICANN and IANA in 2007. Its technical A-label was xn--hlcj6aya9esc7a, the Punycode form used by DNS systems to represent the Tamil script version.
The purpose of .பரிட்சை was not commercial branding, speculation, or public domain sales. It was part of a controlled experiment to see how domain names written entirely in non-Latin scripts would behave in browsers, email, DNS infrastructure, and user applications.
For Tamil speakers, .பரிட்சை was symbolic. It showed that a domain name could exist in Tamil script not only before the dot, but also after the dot.
Registration Rules
.பரிட்சை was never a normal open-registration domain extension.
It was a test TLD managed for evaluation purposes, not a commercial registry. Ordinary users could not register domains under .பரிட்சை as they would under .com, .in, .org, or other public extensions.
The test environment used example-style names to help people try IDN behavior and report issues. After the testing period finished, ICANN retired the test IDN TLDs from the live DNS root zone. Today, .பரிட்சை remains historically listed by IANA, but it is not active in the root zone.
Notable Facts
.பரிட்சை is written in Tamil, one of the world’s major classical languages and a script used by millions of people across India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Tamil diaspora.
Its meaning is connected to “test” or “examination,” which made it suitable for ICANN’s experimental IDN program.
It was part of the first global wave of IDN TLD testing, together with test extensions in Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Greek, Korean, Yiddish, and Japanese.
The extension helped demonstrate an important idea: the Internet should not belong only to users comfortable with ASCII and English-based domain names.
Although .பரிட்சை was retired, the knowledge gained from such experiments helped prepare the way for real IDN country-code and generic top-level domains.
Market Perspective
There is no aftermarket for .பரிட்சை domains because the extension was not opened for ordinary registration and is not active in the live root zone.
Its value is therefore not commercial in the usual domainer sense. You cannot compare .பரிட்சை with .com, .in, .org, .ai, or even modern IDN extensions that accept registrations.
But from a historical perspective, .பரிட்சை has value as a marker of transition. It belongs to the era when the domain name system began moving from a mostly Latin-based addressing system toward a more multilingual Internet.
For domain investors, this is a reminder that not every important TLD is important because of sales volume. Some extensions matter because they show where the Internet came from and where it was trying to go.
Why .பரிட்சை Has Value
.பரிட்சை has value as a historical artifact of the IDN movement.
It represents the moment when Tamil script reached the top level of the DNS, even if only for testing. That makes it part of the technical and cultural story of domain names.
It also shows why IDNs matter. A domain name is not only a technical address. It can be a language, a script, a memory, and a sign of inclusion.
For Tamil users, seeing a full domain name in Tamil script was more than a technical test. It was a glimpse of a more local, more human Internet.
